Well, I have to admit that Mercedes-Benz managed to surprise me with a new oil-burner G-Class model. Yes, the automaker introduced the new diesel SUV a few days ago. This so-called 2019 Mercedes G 350 d is the company’s new entry-point model for Europe. According to our sources, the manufacturer has no intention to bring the diesel in North America anytime soon. Instead, American buyers have 416-horsepower G 550 as the entry-level model.
The 2019 Mercedes G 350 d comes coupled with a new a 3.0-liter inline six diesel. The option made its first appearance under the hood of the facelifted S-Class, so we know what’s going under the hood of the SUV as well. The mill is capable of delivering 286 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque from 1,200 to 3,200 RPM (210 kW and 600 Nm). It’s fitted with a nine-speed automatic transmission that sends 40 percent of power to the front axle. The diesel model should be able to speed up from zero to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 7.4 seconds, while top speed stays limited at 124 mph (199 km/h). Even though it powers the bulky-looking SUV, the engine will deliver quite respectable fuel economy results. According to the automaker, the combined fuel economy will be somewhere between 9.8 to 9.6 liters per 100 kilometers (24 mpg), which is not bad at all.
The iconic off-roader delivers essentially softer ride since it has been redesigned for the first time. The 2019 Mercedes G 350 d rides on a new platform and it’s fitted with a special front suspension: there are double wishbones for more precise steering control and incomparable better ride quality. Just like the rest of the G-Class fleet, the new diesel model will get a refined interior design which is coupled with high-quality materials and a digital cockpit. Plus, there’s also available Exclusive Interior Plus option.
Mercedes hasn’t revealed any pricing information so far, so stay tuned for updates.
