Mercedes’ currently sells just one compact crossover. However, that’s going to be changed pretty soon because the attractive and popular GLC is getting a more off-road focused and boxier footprint sibling. This so-called baby G-Class or GLB SUV will make debut early next year, but that’s not everything. The automaker also works on a hotter 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 model, which will be introduced in late 2019.
The AMG-tuned SUV will get a familiar option beneath the hood. That’s because the GLB 35 is going to take the “heart” from the A35 model. It’s the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The unit will be fitted with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive. By using the awesome mill, the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 should be able to speed up from 0 to 62 mph in 5 seconds, while top speed is going to be limited to 155 mph.
Since we are talking about an AMG-based SUV it’s going to have some hot spots across its exterior and interior. The spy shots reveal a unique grille with mesh treatment and a totally otherwise front fascia that hosts larger air openings. Around back, the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 gets a new and bolder bumper with a pair of exhaust pipes.
The high-performance “baby G” uses larger wheels with bigger brakes with cross-drilled discs, and high-performance tires. It also sits closer to the ground thanks to a sport-tuned suspension, while adaptive dumpers and drive mode selector are going to spice up the ride.
I haven’t managed to see the cabin this time. However, according to some reports, the GLB 35 will use AMG’s usual repertoire that involves some contrasts stitching, different displays, and most probably microfiber accents. A flat-bottomed steering wheel will be on board as well.
Although it’s going to be one hot SUV, the GLB 35 will not be the vanilla model. No, because the automaker works on a more potent 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB 45 which will reportedly use a 400-hp engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
